A TGI Friday's location in Times Square is 1552 Broadway at the 46th Street corner. While most people walk on by this building, those in the know should look up at the 46th Street side of the building for a bit of New York City architectural history, entertainment history and modern art genetic legacy. Pictured to the left is one of four sculptures that adorn the side of the building. The figure showcased here is that of the actress Mary Pickford, dressed as the character, "Little Lord Fauntleroy". This was perhaps her most famous role, she portrayed the fictional character in the black and white silent film of the same name. See the film's original movie poster on the right to match the detail of the building's sculpture. For more information about her, visit the Mary Pickford Institute. There are three other leading ladies featured on the side of this building. Drew Barrymore's great aunt Ethel Barrymore as Ophelia, tap dancer Marilyn Miller as Sunny and opera singer Rosa Ponselle as Norma. The former shoe store of I MIller (the company was named for its founder, Israel Miller) also bears the motto, "The Show Folks Shoe Shop Dedicated to Beauty in Footwear." (see photo below) Israel Miller got his start in the shoe business by becoming the preferred shoemaker to Broadway's actors and actresses. This was his flagship store. The I Miller brand was the first coveted brand of designer shoes. Manolo Blahnik owes Israel Miller a debt of gratitude. The I Miller brand ceased to exist in 1973.

This is a walk through New Year's Eve in Times Square, New York City.
In 1955, the I. Miller brand was growing stale. It hired a young artist named Andy Warhol to create illustrations of ladies shoes for its ad campaign. Warhol frequently created these drawings in the small restaurant owned by a friend of his, Serendipity 3. Andy would give the leftover drawings to Stephen Bruce, the owner, who would frame them and sell them right in the store for $10 to $15. Serendiptiy 3 is currently one of New York City's most popular restaurants and sweet shops. |
