central park signage

This is the sign in Central Park that describes the William Shakespeare statue. It is located on a free standing pole behind the statue in the lawn adjacent to the sidewalk. The sign is typical of the design of the other signage in New York City Parks. It is simple, straightforward and appears to be quite durable to the seasons of the northeastern United States

In these pages, we describe the statue and its sculptors and backers, one of which was American born Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth. Edwin Booth is fascinating character, both on the national stage as well as in New York City history. Yet, few people today outside of Shakespeare enthusiasts know his name or his legacy.

Edwin Booth was a member of an acting family which was very popular in the middle of the 19th Century. His father was a stage actor and so too was his brother, John Wilkes. Yes, as you stand in Central Park and gaze at the statue of William Shakespeare you are actually connected to President Abraham Lincoln's assassin. But brother John Wilkes Booth was a loser and his brother Edwin Booth was a winner. In the months after Lincoln's assassination, Edwin feared his career was over, so heavy was the backlash against the family of the President's killer. But several months later, he was encouraged to test the waters and he returned to the stage. The people were able to separate Edwin from his brother and he led a successful career on the stage.

His residence in New York was located at 16 Gramercy Park and is still there. At one point, Booth donated his home to become The Players Club, a private club for actors and industry professionals where they can socialize and relax in an elegant setting with each other. The Players Club remains active to this day. Visit The Players Club.

One of New York City's "modern speakeasys" is the Blue Owl in the East Village. Located at 192 2nd Ave (192 Second Ave) in the heart of the East Village. visit it at Blue Owl. Try the Ellison cocktail, created by the bartender. It is Hendricks gin, cucumber, mint, lime and bitters, with a reputation of one of the best drinks in the city. Or another NYC specialty cocktail invented here: the Straphanger: muddled strawberries and a lil' bubbly screams summertime.

Did you know that there is a Museum of the American Cocktail? Yes there is! The Museum of the American Cocktail is a nonprofit organization which seeks to celebrate a true American cultural icon, the American Cocktail. Its roots claim the American cocktail to have been invented in New Orleans, but we in NYC might take issue with that. What do you think? When you think of a cocktail, which city do you imagine?
