Looking northward from the Olmsted Flower Bed's east side along the Mall in New York City's Central Park. The statue in the foreground is part of the Park's homage to poetry and literature: a lengthy broad walkway framed by American Elms and named Literary Walk.

The Olmsted Flower Bed, the Literary Walk, Bethesda Terrace and Bethesda Fountain form the virtual heart of New York City's Central Park. This is a view northward up the Literary Walk with the back to the Olmsted Flower Bed. This might be the most photographed walk in Central Park.

When you see couples falling in love and walking through a broad tree lined boulevard, then chances are good, it is Literary Walk in Central Park. When you see parents walking with kids trying to patch things up by walking through the park, then that sure could be Literary Walk.

Frederick Law Olmsted was the designer of Central Park and one of his favorite trees to plant in his landscape designs was the American Elm. The grove of tall trees with high leaves along the Literary Walk are among the United States' greatest collection of American Elms.

Central Park was designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The Olmsted Flower Bed is a tribute to him and was dedicated to him on the anniversary of his 150th birthday. Olmsted is considered the Father of American Landscape Architecture. Olmsted was responsible for over 2,000 landscape architectural designs of parks, villages, universities, residential communities, and public grounds. His most famous works included the Biltmore Gardens, the Washington Capitol grounds and Central Park in New York City.
