This field just south of the Rumsey Playfield and adjacent to the Mall was set aside following World War I to honor the 590 fallen heroes of the 307th Infantry. It is called Memorial Field.

Trees were planted with specific dedication stones honoring the men whose names were inscribed on the bronze memorial plaque. This field often goes unnoticed by those who pass through and even by those who frequent the area.

So have your fun as you enjoy a picnic and cocktails in Central Park, but don't forget to pay your respects to the New York City based soldiers who gave their lives fighting in France in World War I.
