This is one of the 14 bronze plaques that are part of what is now Memorial Field in New York City's Central Park. The plaques were placed in conjunction with a program instituted by the American Forestry Association in Washington DC. Following WWI, the AFA supported tree-planting programs throughout NYC as memorials to fallen soldiers. The Memoiral Field located near the Rumsey Playfield (in the summer it is better known as Summerstage) is NYC's honor for its WWI veterans. The plaques honor 590 NYC-based soldiers.

According to military critics of the time, this division was composed of the poorest fighting materials in the United States-residents of New York City. It was the first division of the U.S. Army to arrive in France. They prevented the Germans from capturing Paris during the Battle of Chateau-Theirry on July 18, 1918.
