This is one of the 14 bronze plaques registered with the American Forestry Association as being part of the official memorial tree planting honors to the fallen veterans of World War I. One of these battalions became known as the Lost Battalion. It was the popular name given to eight units of this division, one of which was the 307th Infantry. This battalion, consisting of roughly 550 men, was isolated by German forces in the Argonne Forest in October 1918. Almost 200 men were killed in action.
The 77th division was formed at Camp Upton in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, at the current site of Brookhaven National Lab. The camp was built for the 77th and was used again later for WWII. Opening August 25, 1917, the majority of the men left for Europe by the end of April, 1918.
The Memorial Field which honors these soldiers is located at approximately 71st Street on the east side of NYC's Central Park. It is just south of the Rumsey Field Summerstage. |
