hill to re-join East Drive, there you will see it on the north (left) side of the sidewalk. Of course any sighting of this magnificent azalea bush in bloom presumes you are going to visit during the first two weeks in May. It is at that time here in the Northeast United States that azalea bushes are in their stupendous bloom.
Where is Balto? Where is the Balto Statue and is it free?
A statue of Balto, sculpted by Frederick Roth, was erected in New York City's Central Park on December 17, 1925.
The statue is located on the main path leading north from the Tisch Children's Zoo. In front of the statue a low-relief slate plaque depicts Balto's sled team and features the following inscription:
Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925.
Endurance · Fidelity · Intelligence
Balto himself was present for the monument's unveiling.
Yes the sculpture is free to visit as are all of the outdoor sculptures of Central Park In order to find Balto, if you are approaching from the south out of the zoo, then you have to look up and to the west for the rock outcropping near the tunnel. If you are approaching from the East Drive, get off the east drive just as it curves north and walk down the sloping steps. Toward the bottom of the steps look up and forward and you will Balto before you! |
