If you look at the photograph of the sign on the left, you will see there is no neon tubing over the "RN" in the word Tavern and no neon tubing at all on the word "ON" in this sign.

For a restaurant that is a signature NYC landmark for so many visitors, we find this broken signage a disgrace and shame on the Tavern's staff for not seeing this and fixing it before we made this observation.
