Bubble Tea in New York City • Places and Recipes You Will Love!

bubble tea diagram

Bubble Tea is a hot or cold drink made of a mixture of sweetened tea and milk. Other flavorings can be added as well. Black gummy balls made of tapioca, called "pearls" or "bubbles" or Boba, rest at the bottom of the cup or glass. The pearls are much larger than those found in tapioca pudding. Most have a diameter of at least 7 millimeters (smaller balls are occasionally used). The pearls are sucked through a special extra wide straw along with the drink. It's the drink you chew!

The flavorings added to bubble tea are usually fruity, and can be either powders, fruit juice/pulp, or syrups. Drinks made with fruit pulp and juice only with boba added are sometimes referred to as bubble tea, and are therefore distinguished by the seller as separate from green, black, or brown (milk) tea.

Homemade Bubble Tea

Brew black tea or green tea, add your favorite flavorings. If you want your Bubble Tea cold, then add the mixture to a blender or a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake. Once blended, add milk and softened tapioca balls.

Fun Stuff!

Shades of Fun! is located in New York City where there is yet another revolution afoot! This is a revolution you can drink and have fun with! It's Tea with a Kick! That's right. Bars, lounges and nightclubs all over the city are spiking up flavored teas and bubble teas with vodka, bourbon and rums for all sort of new and tasty libations! Bubble Tea with Alcohol, all grown up, you can drink 'em all night. There's the Moroccan mojito at the Tea Lounge on Union Street in Brooklyn (Moroccan mint tea based). At the Flatiron Lounge in Manhattan, Hibiscus Swizzle is a hibiscus tea syrup with gin and South African berry juice. Pegu Club infuses gin with Earl Grey tea leaves for her Earl Grey MarTEAni. At the G Spa in the Hotel Gansevoort you can enjoy a rum, mango and peony tea punch; a chamomile-tinged Cosmopolitan; and a Champagne fizz made with a marmalade-ish Korean citron fruit tea. At the Portuguese restaurant Alfama in the West Village, they serve Cháfariz, a mélange of Portuguese brandy, peach liqueur, fresh fruit juices and seasonally selected teas. In the fall and winter, they use black vanilla tea replaces the peach tea for a warmer drink.
