Not many people realize, however, that the green-red-green webbing and horsebit are of historic significance to this Italian fashion house.
The man who started it all back in 1921 was a man named Guccio Gucci. He spent many years as a young man working for the privileged clientele at the Savoy Hotel in London. When he returned to his native Florence in Italy, he set his sights on catering to what he knew: the rich. Wisely, he tapped the talents of master leather craftsmen in Tuscany and created a line of luxury leather luggage and personal accessories such as gloves and belts. He infused the line with an equestrian theme and he was a hit.
Decades later, the horsebit and stirrup motif is still very much associated with the Gucci name.
