More Background on the Burberry Company:
In 1895, Burberry developed the Tielocken, which we know now as the predecessor to the trench coat. The Tielocken was worn by British Army officers.
Asked by the military to update the Tielocken, Burberry added epaulettes and the now-famous D ring clip. (The reader knows of course, the D ring is aptly named because it is shaped like a capital letter D.
The next addition to the coat came in the form of a checkered plain lining, which wa added to the coat during the 1920s. It was in the middle of the 20th century the Burberry company began to receive Royal Warrants from the royal family of England.
Thomas Burberry could not have known that he was the beginning of was the starting point for a company that would last for over 100 years and still going strong into the 21st Century! Bet you did not know that!

The company further associated themselves with the British military in 1901 with the introduction of the Equestrian Knight logo of a charging horse. The banner carried by the knight's joust reads, "Prosum" which means forward. But it was in 1914 that the trench coat as we know it today was really born.

| When he was 21 years old (1856), Thomas Burberry (right) was the apprentice to a curtain maker when he boldly opened up a small shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. He needed a fabric that was breathable, weatherproof and tearproof. So if you can't find it anywhere you have to make it yourself. |

| As a tailor his attention to detail made the small store into a success. By 1880, he had created his own fabric for use in his coats. |
