The world is full of great stories that pasty teachers pass off as history. History is all about stories -- that's all that history is: stories, just good stories. With that in mind, the history of Gucci's bamboo handled bag is just another good story. In the 1940s, Italy was very much part of World War II. Materials of all sorts were scarce. The Gucci house could get their hands on a solid supply of bamboo. They created techniques for turning bamboo into curved handbags and another enduring fashion was born.
Like the Burberrys of England and the Bulgaris of Italy and the Cartiers of France, Gruccio Gucci's family continued to manage his business after the patriarch's death in 1953. His sons Aldo, Vasco, Ugo and Rodolfo brought the company through the post World War II period and sent it soaring into the 1960s.
The sons move the company forward with blinding speed, supervising store openings all over the world. They use their influence to move into the glamorous world of film celebrities and fashionable people in all walks of life. Grace Kelly, the American film star who would later go on to become the Princess of Monaco, would be so beloved by the Guccis, they created the Flora print scarf especially for her.
