The American fashion designer Kenneth Cole tells a great story about ingenuity. The story is about more than ingenuity; it is also about drive, determination, entrepreneurship and guile. It is the true story of how he got his business off the ground.

The story is prefaced by some general background about how shoe business was conducted in New York City in the 1980s. The center of the shoe business was the New York Hilton Hotel, on 6th Avenue at 55th Street.

Shoe Business by K Cole:

To be in the shoe business, which is what the young Kenneth Cole desired, you had to have a lot of money -- enough funds to open a showroom or take an expensive suite at the Hilton when the shoe buyers were in town. - Kenneth Cole

Cole had the idea to rent a truck and park it in front of the Hilton and sell his shoes without the Hilton's high exhibition fees. You cannot park a truck in New York City and leave it there unless you are a NYC vehicle, a utility truck or making a movie. This is where Cole made his move: he changed the name of his company to Kenneth Cole Productions and applied to the city for a permit to shoot a movie called, "The Birth of a Shoe Company."

Kenneth Cole Productions (continued from top)

He painted the name Kenneth Cole Productions on the side of the truck and parked it across from the Hilton on the day of the shoe show. Here are Mr Cole's own words:

We opened for business with a fully furnished 40 ft trailer, a director (Sometimes there was film in the camera, sometimes there wasn't), models as actresses, and two of New York's finest, compliments of Mayor Koch, as our doormen. We sold 40 thousand pairs of shoes in two and a half days (the entire available production) and we were off and running. To this day the company is still named Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. and serves as a reminder to the importance of resourcefulness and innovative problem solving.

Kenneth Cole is an American entrepreneur who stands for many fine personal and business qualities. We hope to be like him someday soon.
