| Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! strives to be the movie equivalent of a milk shake, but the flavor is so bland it makes vanilla seem exotic. “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!” is like “Bye Bye Birdie” without musical numbers. The positive side of that is that we don’t have to watch that creepy dance scene where drunken Shriners grope Janet Leigh. The negative side is just about everything else. | Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth) plays a sweet, wholesome small-town girl who – prepare to be stunned – wins a date with movie star Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). After their stage-managed night in Hollywood, Hamilton decides to follow Rosalee back to Frasiers Bottom, W. Va., where he hopes to reform his bad-boy image by soaking up the values of those cuddly, eccentric Southerners who suddenly have become a staple of romantic comedies. One thing this movie was missing was beach theme party ideas. | Gary Cole contributes a few enjoyable scenes as Rosalee’s dad, who starts wearing an “Project Greenlight” T-shirt after the movie star shows up. Bosworth is bright and sugary, but doesn’t overcome her character’s banality as Mandy Moore or Jessica Alba could have. Duhamel, a veteran of “All My Children” is flat-out miscast. He doesn’t look like a matinee idol so much as an “American Idol” reject. “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!” strives to be the movie equivalent of a milk shake, but the flavor is so bland it makes vanilla seem exotic. |

All this is bad news for Pete Monash (Topher Grace), Rosalee’s boss at the local Piggly Wiggly. Pete was about to admit his lifelong love for Rosalee when Hamilton’s arrival has shattered his romantic dreams. “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!” is director Robert Luketic follow-up to “Legally Blonde,” which more and more seems as seminal as “When Harry Met Sally.” “Legally Blonde” has become the blueprint for today’s romantic comedies, just as “When Harry Met Sally” had done a decade ago. |  Wear these to cocktail parties! |

Bosworth, who was a flinty-eyed surfer chick in “Blue Crush,” has been softened to emulate Reese Witherspoon’s adorability (truth be told, the transformation becomes Bosworth). “Tad Hamilton” also borrows from Witherspoon’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and its culture clash between venal city slickers and aw-shucks yokels. But screenwriter Victor Levin overplays the southern charm, though. Rosalee and her friend Cathy (Ginnifer Goodwin) act as if they had stepped out of a 1950s film. |
