The tradition of observing birthdays probably began because parents were so grateful that their child was healthy enough to have survived another year. In the past, and in still developing countries today, the death rate for children was extraordinarily high. And the mortality rate for adults over 40 was also quite high compared to the rate today.

Birthdays are celebrated with birthday parties thrown in honor of the birthday girl or boy. Birthday parties take many forms and change considerably in theme and tone over the years. A person's first birthday is much different than their 50th birthday. For a 1st birthday, the parents invite the grandparents, the cousins, the doting aunts and uncles, make a birthday cake or cupcakes and fuss over the little baby.

People will wear party hats and maybe even have some noisemakers. Other party decorations can include streamers and confetti.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to come up with a plan for a child's first birthday party. But the teen years get a little trickier. The child is part adult at this point and won't likely want all the doting aunts and uncles around anymore.

The fifteen year old will probably want more of their friends around. But parents of teenagers take heart; this phase only lasts a few years. Then the teenager becomes an adult and much more tame.
