Mardi Gras has its origins as a Christian religious holiday. It was celebrated by explorers from France along the Mississippi River in the territory which later became Louisiana in the late 1600s, possibly the early 1700s. Over time, the occasion has been commercialized so that it is barely recognizable for the mark it makes on the Christian calendar. To explain: the Mardi Gras holiday extends from one Christian holiday, the Feast of the Epiphany to the day before Ash Wednesday, another important day on the calendar of the Christian church. The Feast of the Epiphany in the Catholic Church is the Feast of the Three Kings.
In local parlance, the day before Ash Wednesday is also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. The day almost invariably falls in March. What this means for Mardi Gras parties is that revelers have almost two months of parties before calling it quits and enjoying the delights of Spring.
Mardi Gras is now one of the most colorful and jubilant holidays on the calendar. Everyone knows instantly that if you see a bauble or trinket that is purple, green and gold, or combinations thereof, it's Mardi Gras time!
- Purple: represents justice
- Green: faith
- Gold: power
Such jubilant colors! |

Contemporary Mardi Gras celebrations are a jambalaya of the cultures which have influenced it along the way. The masked balls and royal themes are taken directly from the traditions of the French royal courts. The beats and rhythms of the music evolved from the influence of the African culture. African people were first brought to the USA as slaves predominantly in the Southern states; after achieving liberation from slavery, some of that joy of freedom helped create jazz music. The point of intersection for these independent events: New Orleans.
