The host, hostess or bride and groom will have a lot of decisions to make along the way in the party planning process. Many clients leave these seemingly small and miniscule decisions to the professional event planner. And that can be a very wise decision for the busy client or engaged couple.
The choice of chair type is driven of course by budget and/or the personal choice of the client. The chairs themselves don't have to be covered at all; many chairs at banquets are simply beautiful pieces of furniture on their own and should never be covered. In this case, of course, the science of the chair cover has no bearing.
If chair covers are expected to be included as part of the overall decor of the party, the client will have to decide whether to use folding chairs or wooden chairs. This choice will again be driven by the client's budget and/or personal choice. Another contributing factor in the wooden vs folding chair decision will be the type of party and the type of guests who will be in attendance. If the party is meant for young people, largely teenagers as in a bar or bat mitzvah, then the wise choice is the covered folding chair constructed of plastic and aluminum. In these cases, the guests are not likely to sit in the chairs for a long period of time and they are likely to cast themselves out of the chair with great enthusiasm to get to the dance floor.
Similarly, if the guests at the event are going to be drinking a lot of alcohol and dancing a lot, aluminum chairs are the best bet. But the client is not off the hook with just the aluminum decision. The are different styles of aluminum chairs as well, primarily indicated by the shape of the back of the chair. Primarily and thankfully, the two basic choices are rounded back and square back.

Once the decision has been made for the type of chair that will be used for the series of parties, then attention will turn to the type of chair cover that will best set off the look and feel, or theme of the party. Many, many design factors will influence the chair cover choice. At this point, the client should absolutely, positively not meddle in the specific choices decided by the party planner.
For the special event planner will have made the choice for chair cover taking many, many other factors in mind. They will choose a simple, tightly constructed, well fitted chair cover if the planner wishes other elements of the room design to capture the focus of the guests. Elaborate centerpieces, or a magnificent ceiling design may indicate the planner's desire to focus the guests attention upward above the shoulder level. It is a subtle effect, but a decorative chair cover will bring the guests' attention downward, away from the preferred focal point.
It is best to heed the advice of the professional designer who has been hired to create the perfect party. As the client, you can, of course, express yourself if you have strong feelings on the subject. Regardless, you should at the very least be aware that the chair cover is an area in which there are choices to be made and decorating decisions to be had.
The range of fabrics and cover styles is unlimited. With the right budget, the client can have custom chair covers made especially for a single event or can be used for a series of theme parties. If, for example the corporate client or fundraising group has signed on to be a longtime sponsor of a series of fundraising events in the fight against breast cancer, it might be a good suggestion to have a chair cover manufacturer create custom covers in pink that can be used for the sponsored series of events or parties.
Another example when the creation of custom chair covers is a good idea and well indicated is when the client's company, charity or special event will have multiple functions or parties and the colors of their logo are well known. |
