We love the design details of the spectacular palapa roof! Located on the ocean away from the center of the Village is Las Cazuelas restaurant and Chispas bar housed in a building. The most prominent feature of this location on the resort is its spectacular palapa roof. This style of roof is gorgeous from both the outside and the inside. Architecturally magnificent!

Enjoy an oceanfront drink under a spectacular Palapa Roof in Cancun!
Much of this resort was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. While we don't have exact measurements for this roof, we were just fans and observers, it appears to be about 30 feet high to the apex. You'll note the smoke from the kitchen wafting from the cap.

Did you know that palapa roofs have been around in Mexico for about 2,000 years? Before their architectural beauty became fully appreciated by tourists and visitors, palapa roofs were considered to be a sign of the poor Mexican society. But they are environmentally-friendly, beautiful and highly functional in the tropical Mexican climate.

Palapa-roofed buildings are sometimes simply called palapas. "Palapa" refers to <palm frond thatched roof>.

The underside view of the Palapas Roof is as beautiful as the outside!

Here in the low light of dinner in Las Cazuelas restaurant, diners can observe how the interior structure of the palapa roof becomes an integral part of the dining experience. Palapas means, "umbrella" in Spanish and this is a big one.

This is the most spectacular building on the entire resort. The building is surrounded by outdoor seating although during our visit, the seagulls begging for food tableside made it most unpleasant.

Lunch is served in this restaurant for those interested in a higher end meal for lunch than in La Hacienda, which is the main Village dining room.

This resort was wrecked by Hurricane Wilma but what a comeback. Our hurricane sunglasses won't hurt you a bit! You'll make more friends!

The palapa roof is a magnificent study in symmetry, geometry and natural materials. In the photo to the right, you may observe the primary structural elements in the form of the larger pieces of timber. Layered on top of a palapas roof of this size is a secondary framework of thinner branches placed more closely together. The dried reeds of this roof are then woven onto this framework.

Don't be afraid to admire the beauty of the roof as much as you admire the other members or member of your dinner party!

At night time, when dinner is served, you can enjoy a relaxing meal while listening tot he ocean waves just outside the doors of the restaurant. After dinner, you may enjoy oceanfront cocktails, tequila shots anyone, on the outside deck, or patio area.

Dinner is served here in accordance with a more limited menu than in La Hacienda. Here is a sample of the entrees:

Garlic Shrimp: served with cilantro rice, avocado and rajas

Chipotle Crusted Salmon: broiled salmon rolled in chipotle served with spinach, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, black bean and corn salsa and a chipotle emulsion

Pan Roasted, Nut Crusted, Adobo Red Snapper: Sweet potato mash, jicama slaw, cilantro oil and a pumpkin seed butter sauce.

Pork Loin in Achiote: served in a banana leaf with fried plantains, chayote and grilled scallions

Papantla Style Beef Tenderloin: Mexican roasted potatoes, pico de gallo, pepper sauce and broiled tomatoes

Chicken with Mole Sauce: Served with tomato rice and sautéed zucchini
