Club Med Cancun Mexico Yucatan • Agave Farming Requires Patience

Agave plants can that can take a decade or more to mature. As a result, the pace of growing the tequila plant is most suited to the slower lifestyle of rural Mexico. Only an expert agave farmer can detect when each plant will be ready; every agave has its time. A very large, but still somewhat typical, can weigh more than 100 pounds at harvest. Farmers have to plant so many years ahead, region-wide agave shortages and gluts are common. It's very much a "futures market". For more information, continue below.

Agave Glut, Overplanting 10 years ago

In the early years of the 21st Century there was a glut of agave. Farmers collectively had 360 million agaves growing at the same time. This makes it difficult for farmers to get a good price. In exploring ways to diversify, the state of Jalisco government built three production facilities for agave nectar. Agave Nectar is a fructose sweetener that American nutritionists have been touting as a healthy alternative to sugar.

As long as tequila continues to grow in popularity around the globe, agave will be the jewel of Jalisco in Western Mexico. These fields feature a red-brown clay soil of Los Altos in the agave-growing highlands east of the Tequila valley. This is iron- and magnesium-rich earth.

In western Mexico, tequila factories feature Spanish-style haciendas and lush, paradisiacal grounds. The many factories that dot the area all smell the same inside: musty, yeasty and cloyingly sweet. They all sound the same too as they go about the work of harvesting the agave plants and turning into that burning liquor, tequila or mescal.

Anyone who has ever visited a tequila factory will remember the sound of the shovel scraping along the asphalt and the swoosh of the harvester's machete. During high season the charring kilns work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

July 2008 - James Bond wannabes can now spy on anyone and anything in your surroundings just by wearing a pair of mp4 sunglasses. Yes, they are pricey, but you can now purchase sunglasses with a video recorder embedded in the sunglasses frame. The lens is located just above the nose. The video records everything the wearer sees in 3gp format which can be converted into mp4 format then loaded up to youtube. Great for video bloggers!

July 2008 - Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, is teaming up with Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier to launch a clothing line in the Fall of 2008. The clothing line will be sold at Kitson, the store of choice for the world's pop culture celebrities. Super red hot designer Christian Audigier is opening up another one of his stores in Las Vegas this summer and to increase his own mystique, he is opening a nightclub in Sin City at the Treasure Island Hotel. The club will be called, "The Nightclub" and will opening On July 4th and we would not be surprised if Michael Jackson re-emerges at the Opening Night party.

June 2008 - Ray Ban breaks new color ground next month when they release their first ever pastel colored Ray Bans. The pastel color Wayfarers are being launched in New York City by a promotion that features billboards designed by five NYC-based artists. The company plans to unveil the billboards on July 1st and promises that one of them will "stop traffic". Ray Ban is hoping for a big summer hit with this latest trend in Wayfarer color.
