Jack O Lantern Origins

October 31 in Ireland is celebrated as the end of the Celtic calender year in the holiday, All Hallows Eve. Candles were placed in hollowed out root vegetables and in the windows for two purposes: to welcome deceased ancestors and warn off evil spirits such as the legendary "Stingy Jack". Stingy Jack became a lost soul destined to roam the Earth for eternity with just a burning coal for light. Jack put the coal in a hollowed out turnip and set off on his journey.

The Irish referred to his ghost as "Jack of the Lantern," which was later shortened to "Jack O' Lantern."

What a versatile vegetable the pumpkin is! You can eat it, throw it, decorate it and even eat its seeds for a snack! And once a year, of course, we decorate them at the time of Halloween.

Pumpkins originated in Central America then made their way north finding their way to the tribes of what we now call the USA. Early colonists used the hard skin as a vessel, and used the skin as its very own

cooking pot. Slice off the top of the pumpkin, add milk, spices and honey, put the stem cap back on and nestle the pumpkin into the embers of a fire. Cook well for a lot of hours and you've got a sweet and creamy Colonial Pumpkin Pie!

Before this time, however, early travelers had already brought pumpkin seeds back to Ireland. The Irish incorporated the pumpkin into the carving rituals of their All Hallow Eve observances.

July 2008 - An ebay trader was given a suspended prison sentence and a tagging order after admitting dealing in counterfeit sunglasses when he appeared before a court in England. The trader was sentenced to eight months imprisonment suspended for 12 months and was given a three-month curfew order requiring him to wear a tag and be at home between eight in the evening and six in the morning. He was also ordered not to use ebay for 12 months. Acting on a complaint received from the public, officers from Gloucestershire County Council Trading Standards Service in England seized 65 pairs of sunglasses bearing the brand names Oakley Sunglasses and Chanel Sunglasses from the now-convicted trader. These were all marked with registered trademarks and designed to fool the public that they were the genuine product. Bad boy.
