Each young swimmer will ahve strengths and weaknesses. Building up technique and strength in those weak areas is likely the goal of the summer camp experience for that swimmer. Some parents may be interested in a starter program for absolute novice swimmers. Many school districts do not have the luxury of offering swimming as part of their curriculum. Students in these districts will not learn to swim unless they gain this knowledge and experience within their family. Young swimmers need continuous practice in each of the many elements of the swimming stroke and pool mechanics. Repetition in swimming enables the swimmer to achieve their highest level of ability. Examine the camp's promotional material and ask questions live to determine which of the skill segments are offered at the camp. Because swimming is all about descipline, structured, regular practices should be the backbone of the program. Stroke technique instruction in all four componets of swimming must be offered: front crawl, breast stroke, back stroke and butterfly. Best techniques for starting off the block must be offered, included variant technique for tall versus shorter stature swimmers. A full measure of dryland training must be included in the overall summer camp plan. The all-important turn should be a part of every camp session. Swimmers should receive two water sessions each day for a total of four hours.
Camps which endeavor to host young swimmers hoping to achieve elite level must offer the most serious positions possible. Focus should be on progressive stroke techniques. A third session in the water is the norm for elite levels. Classroom instruction should focus on the technical specific breakdown of all four competitive strokes, drills, starts, turns as well as goal setting, dryland training and educational lectures. Weight training components should be available as well. Swimmer should be exposed to body line driven technique and exposure to Olympic-level training programs.
